My sister has been on a keto diet incentive November 2017 with great success. I am wanting to as well. I am diabetic and although the diet itself sounds healthy the fasting and intermediate fasting frightens me. I stopped going to my Nutrishionist because she kept changing my diet from Paleo, to B+blood type diet to Atkins… I kept extensive food/drink logs and my sugars went crazy as well as I felt ill. My sis sad this was a better diet. Seems better, I prefer a more natural foods/drinks approach to life style. I started to day and fasted from 12am to 1:30 pm . Had an omelet with greens and veggies and cheese, guacamole, radish and cucumber as sides. Having black coffee with cinnamon and tumeric. I am a bartender so I work crazy hours. So I am thinking this might work for me. Except I went grocery shopping yesterday and bought bananas, pineapple, tangerines and blackberries. Only black berries are ok. I usually have infused water and veggie/fruit smoothies I make during the day/night. So no smoothies, veggies or fruit at work. Hmmmm Any thoughts? I have battled thyroid issues since childhood. I am asthmatic since birth and will be 60 in October. I am tired of being tired. Thank you, sincerely, Maryjane

This is highly unlikely to occur in normal circumstances because for most people it’s a challenge to get into optimal ranges for ketosis so getting into the range where you need medical intervention isn’t likely.
I read some of your other articles about exercise, and chronic exercise- this notion appeals to me. Efficient short period of time vs marathon runs. I am essentially a product of my ancestors and I naturally seek the easiest/efficient route! Some say laziness, I say it’s intelligence.

We’ve longed been told that calorie restriction, increasing exercise and reducing dietary fat intake are the keys to weight loss. You might be thinking why isn’t the body constantly breakdown fats in the liver? Well, when your body is producing insulin, the insulin prevents the fat cells from entering the bloodstream so they stay stored in the body.
The acetyl-CoA enters the citric acid cycle and undergoes an aldol condensation with oxaloacetate to form citrate. The citric acid cycle is a key pathway for metabolism. It provides precursors for many amino acids as steps in the cycle. It also allows high energy molecules to form; 3x NADH, FADH2, and GTP/ATP are all produced by one iteration of the cycle. This is equivalent to 10 ATP.[25][26] Acetyl-CoA undergoes this process in any cell, while liver cells can also undergo a different process: ketogenesis.
Another process also happens during ketosis that helps keep your body energized, and it’s called gluconeogenesis. This occurs when glycerol (created during beta-oxidation) get’s converted into glucose that your body can use for energy. Protein in your diet can also be converted to glucose in small amounts. So as you can see, essentially your body is able to create its own source of necessary glucose without getting it from carbohydrate foods. The human body is very efficient, and it knows just how to convert other macronutrients (protein and fat) into useable molecules that can be dispersed throughout the body as needed.
But in another study that exposed rats to high-pressure oxygen containing ketone esters such as R,S-1,3-butanediol acetoacetate diester, the rodents saw increased blood β-hydroxybutryate and decreased seizures.
Let’s assume we have three different people consuming 2000 calories per day split into three different meal frequencies. One consumes the 2000 calories in 5 meals per day; one consumes the 2000 calories in 3 meals per day; one consumes the 2000 calories in 2 meals per day.

    The exact ratio of recommended macronutrients in your diet (grams of carbs vs. fat vs. protein) will differ depending on your specific goals and current state of health. Your age, gender, level of activity and current body composition can also play a role in determining your carb versus fat intake.

    Hi, Leslie. This is just my personal experience: when it comes to kids, change should be gradual. My son is 2 & 1/2 and is highly sensitive to sugar (and I’m not just talking processed-junk-food-sugar…he reacts to things that most would consider perfectly healthy food options like whole grain bread). He shows clear signs of low-blood-sugar within 1-2 hours of eating if the food was mainly carb-based. He has extreme hyper-activity issues, poor sleep and even skin reactions for 1-2 days after eating the “wrong foods”. He has not had any formal medical diagnosis of anything, and I don’t think he needs it. He just very clearly thrives much better on a diet of healthy fats, protein and more natural sugar (such as fruit and honey…though even these need to be moderated) and moderate grains like brown rice. It took a long time (about 6 months) to get him adjusted off of whole grains and the occasional sugary treat. I feel like having done it cold-turkey would have been disastrous. But it was doable over time. For him, it’s simply what works best.

    No. That’s not what I’m saying. Cardio isn’t bad – quite the opposite. Everyone should do some form of cardio; swimming, walking, running, hiking, playing a sport – whatever. The point I’m trying to impress upon you is that most people resort to ‘cardio’ when trying to lose fat but it’s of the least importance when changing your body composition is the goal.
