There are numerous benefits that come with being on keto: from weight loss and increased energy levels to therapeutic medical applications. Most anyone can safely benefit from eating a low-carb, high-fat diet. Below, you’ll find a short list of the benefits you can receive from a ketogenic diet. For a more comprehensive list, you can also read our in-depth article here >
Pour your freshly brewed coffee in a blender or a heat-proof jar (if using immersion blender). Add butter, Octane Oil, and any suggested optional ingredients. Pulse until smooth and frothy. If you’re not using all the coffee at once, do not leave it in the French press. Instead, pour it into a jar or a thermal carafe or thermal mug to keep it warm.

Canadian Journal of Zoology. 59 (6): 1040–1044. doi:10.1139/z81-145. ISSN 0008-4301. Body growth and carcass composition were measured in lean reindeer during the juvenile growth period between birth and 3 years of age. Mean carcass weight in these lean reindeer was 56 ± 4% of body weight and the deposition of body muscle and bone mass was linearly correlated with body weight after the 1st month of age. The weight of the brain relative to body weight and carcass weight declined, while the relative changes in heart, liver, kidneys, parotid glands, and tissues of the gastrointestinal tract were small after the neonatal period. The extractable fat content in carcasses increased from 4.4 to 11.4% of wet weight or approximately 100 g fat at birth and 3.5 kg fat in adult reindeer. Fat-free dry matter represented a constant percentage (18–20%) of wet carcass weight independent of body weight after the neonatal period, while a significant inverse relationship between carcass fat and body water was found.
If you do light exercise that burns an extra 300 calories per day, you’ll burn 2,100 calories per day, putting you at a deficit of 100 calories. Simply by eating at a deficit, you will lose weight because your body will tap into stored resources for the remaining energy it needs.
This has probably been asked a million times before; if so, I apologize for being redundant. How often per week would you recommend eating the foods listed under ‘eat occasionally’? I’ve been on keto since the end of September ’17, but right now I’m trying to change things up a bit to see if I can tweak my fat/weight loss.
The range you want to be in for optimal ketosis is anywhere between 1.5-3mmol/l. I know this doesn’t make much sense to you now, but if you use one of the three options listed previously, you’ll understand your ketone levels much more.
An easy way to understand how your hormones work is to picture them as strands of a spider web: you can’t remove one strand without affecting the rest. In other words, when one hormone is out of balance, the rest are negatively impacted— but when the functioning of one hormone is improved, the rest are improved too.
The nerve impulse is characterised by a great influx of sodium ions through channels in the neuron’s cell membrane followed by an efflux of potassium ions through other channels. The neuron is unable to fire again for a short time (known as the refractory period), which is mediated by another potassium channel. The flow through these ion channels is governed by a “gate” which is opened by either a voltage change or a chemical messenger known as a ligand (such as a neurotransmitter). These channels are another target for anticonvulsant drugs.[7]

Healthy fats include saturated fats, monounsaturated fats and certain types of polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), especially omega-3 fatty acids. It’s best to include all types in your diet, with an emphasis on saturated fats, especially compared to PUFAs.
Making sure vegetables have some fiber in will also usually help. Getting in some good quality fiber from non-starchy vegetables can solve this problem. Though if that’s not enough, usually psyllium husk powder will work or taking a probiotic.
I really think the key, is re-educating your mind to stop seeing quality fat as evil. I eat whole foods. Low carb, low starch vegies. Olive oil, coconut oil or butter, avocado. Good quality protein (I buy the best I can afford, it’s not always grass fed or organic, but it’s the best I can do). Eggs.
There is a better way: Swap the all-or-nothing approach for one or two healthy switch-ups in your daily routine. “Doing this can lead to more weight loss than you ever imagined,” says Marissa Lippert, RD, author of The Cheater’s Diet.
When it comes to food, don’t be a militant dietary fucknut running around telling people certain foods are “good” and certain foods are “bad”; this isn’t nursery, you’re not getting sent to the “naughty chair” because you ate a slice of pizza. Fuck, man, chill. But, at the same time, you probably – definitely – shouldn’t be eating like a fucking 10 year old let loose in Willy Wonka’s factory.
On a keto diet, about 65 to 75 percent of the calories you consume daily should come from fat. About 20 to 30 percent should come from protein. The remaining 5 percent or so should come from carbohydrates.
Insulin resistance can lead to type II diabetes if left unmanaged. An abundant amount of research shows that a low carb, ketogenic diet can help people lower their insulin levels to healthy ranges. Read more on keto and insulin resistance >
As far as fat burning goes, is this completely wrong? Should I not be doing cardio AND circuit training? I find it really difficult to stay within my “fat burn zone” (unless the Fitbit is overestimating my HR) – to do that I would have to go slow and focus on going slow the whole time. If I just go at my natural pace where I don’t feel like I’m racing someone and I feel like I’m working up a sweat but it’s not strenuous and I can keep the pace for 30+ minutes, my HR is always at 168 or around there.
In Asia, the normal diet includes rice and noodles as the main energy source, making their elimination difficult. Therefore, the MCT-oil form of the diet, which allows more carbohydrate, has proved useful. In India, religious beliefs commonly affect the diet: some patients are vegetarians, will not eat root vegetables or avoid beef. The Indian ketogenic diet is started without a fast due to cultural opposition towards fasting in children. The low-fat, high-carbohydrate nature of the normal Indian and Asian diet means that their ketogenic diets typically have a lower ketogenic ratio (1:1) than in America and Europe. However, they appear to be just as effective.[53]

I was wondering about calories and optimum numbers to stay at to lose weight. I’m a bit confused. Some people say don’t count them and other say you need to. I’m afraid I’ll gain weight if I don’t track and eat that much fat in my diet.
Research shows the keto diet may also enhance a patient’s response to chemotherapy. In fact, one study reported an improvement in sleep and emotional functioning in patients undergoing chemo who were also following a keto diet (23).
“I used to eat out at restaurants up to nine times a week! By cutting back to just once a week and ordering a grilled chicken salad instead of a large bowl of pasta, I’ve lost 20 pounds in one month.” —Kerri Butler, Joplin, MO
Ketosis: The metabolic state when fat is the primary energy source instead of carbohydrates. Ketosis is a perfectly normal state of human metabolism. Without ketosis, all humans would have died many thousands of years ago in times of carbohydrate shortages, such as winter and drought.
• While a chronically low-fat diet can affect testosterone levels, what is often overlooked is the totality of the caloric deficit and more importantly how much weight (and body fat) someone’s lost. Eric Helms summed this up brilliantly:
Notice that the blue bar – 2 meals per day – actually increases your metabolic rate the most, requiring 100 cals to digest the food. The red bar – 3 meals – comes in second, requiring 66 cals. And, contrary to the popular claim, 5 small meals actually comes in last, requiring the least number of calories to digest the food.
Calorie counting is not required on keto, nor should it be necessary. When you eat a diet high in fat, it is more satiating than a diet high in carbs (e.g., sugar). Generally, this cuts down on your chances of overeating. Instead of counting calories, pay attention to your macro levels. For further reading, learn more about micronutrients on a keto diet.
grass-fed meat (beef, lamb, goat, venison), wild-caught fish & seafood (avoid farmed fish), pastured pork and poultry, pastured eggs, gelatin, ghee, butter – these are high in healthy omega 3 fatty acids (avoid sausages and meat covered in breadcrumbs, hot dogs, meat that comes with sugary or starchy sauces)
The Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) – Follow the Standard Ketogenic Diet for a period of time, then eat a higher-carb diet for a couple days and restart the cycle. This diet is less effective for achieving your goals, and can lead to swings in energy, but some find it easier to maintain long-term as it allows “cheat” meals.
In order to lose fat, you must monitor your caloric intake and eat fewer calories than you expend. That way, your body will use stored fat for fuel. When your body burns fat for fuel, you don’t get to pick which parts of your body the fat will come off. Eventually, your entire body will be leaner, including that coveted abdominal area!
Urine Testing – When ketone levels in your body increase past a useful point, they get excreted through urine. You can easily measure excess amounts of ketones with a urine strip. It’s easy to test at home, but not completely reliable.
In patients with diabetes, ketosis and eventually ketoacidosis may occur if insufficient insulin is used to properly manage the condition, if meals are skipped, or if an insulin reaction occurs (often while asleep).
Exercise and diet can help you lose weight by creating a calorie deficit. Your body will begin to break down stored fat through a series of complicated metabolic pathways. The byproducts of fat metabolism are expelled through your lungs, sweat and urine, while the energy liberated from fat is used to maintain your body’s biological function.

  1. I’m quite amazed at the level of fitness I have managed to achieve just since Christmas. And the best part is, that I do not crave carbs. I do not need them like I used to. And I highly recommend anyone anyone who is struggling with their weight gives it a try. It takes more than a week or two. Give yourself a good month. The energy I feel is phenomenal compared to how I felt before. I’m no athlete – but for me it has been the best way to change my life for the good quickly. I’ve tried low cal, low fat etc. got fatter and fatter. And on those diets I found I had to exercise 3 or 4 hours a day to keep losing weight. I’m sold
Dark green and leafy is always the best choice for vegetables. Most of your meals should be a protein with vegetables, and an extra side of fat. Chicken breast basted in olive oil, with broccoli and cheese. Steak topped with a knob of butter, and a side of spinach sauteed in olive oil.
To determine how much protein to consume, take into account your body composition, ideal weight, gender, height and activity level. Remember: Too much protein can impede ketosis. To avoid the breakdown of protein into glucose, avoid eating more than 1.5-2 grams per kilo of lean body mass.

  2. • Quadrant 1. Enjoyable but not healthy: This is the prototypical Standard Western Diet – high fat, high carb, high calorie, high everything. It’s highly enjoyable but about as healthy as bungee jumping without the bungee into a pit of fire breathing great white sharks.

In the absence of glucose, which is normally used by cells as a quick source of energy, the body starts to burn fat and produces ketones instead. Once ketone levels in the blood rise to a certain point, you enter into a state of ketosis— which usually results in quick and consistent weight loss until you reach a healthy, stable body weight.
Some research suggests that ketogenic diets might help lower your risk of heart disease. Other studies show specific very-low-carb diets help people with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Researchers are also studying the effects of these diets on acne, cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and nervous system diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Lou Gehrig’s disease.
    11) Legumes (beans, chickpeas, lentil, peanuts, etc). Apart from peanuts, legumes are relatively high in carbs and should be avoided. Apart from their high carb content, legumes contain lectins and phytates which makes them hard to digest. They have been linked to leaky gut syndrome, PCOS, IBS and Hashimoto’s. When it comes to peanuts, some people avoid them while others use them in moderation. If you are considering peanuts, make sure you read this post first: Peanuts on a Ketogenic Diet: Eat or Avoid?
MCT is short for medium chain triglycerides. MCTs are a type of fat that can be readily used for energy by your body and do not have to be broken down before use. They are precursors to ketones and help your body burn fat instead of burning carbs. The primary whole food source of MCT’s are coconuts.
It has nothing to do with secret pills or crazy workouts. In this 3 day challenge, you’ll learn why your body loves to store fat, how you can turn it into a fat burning machine, and how to maintain the lifestyle through awesome meals.
Low-carb diets seem to help keep your blood sugar lower and more predictable than other diets. But when your body burns fat for energy, it makes compounds called ketones. If you have diabetes, particularly type 1, too many ketones in your blood can make you sick. So it’s very important to work with your doctor on any changes in your diet.

  3. The ketogenic diet focuses on the reduction of dietary carbohydrate intake. Individuals with type 2 diabetes are recommended to reduce carbohydrate intake as carbohydrates are converted to glucose and increase blood sugar levels.
Also, when the body is in ketosis, one’s breath may smell of acetone. This is due to the breakdown of acetoacetic acid into acetone and carbon dioxide exhaled through the lungs. Acetone is the chemical responsible for the smell of nail polish remover and some paint thinners.
Beginning the ketogenic diet is different than making most other dietary changes, including many popular low-carb diets, because it involves actually changing your metabolism is pretty significant ways. Most people find that if they ease into the diet, giving themselves about 3–4 weeks to adjust, they experience fewer negative symptoms associated with the early stages.

  4. Great article, thanks. I have explored keto style a few times, the first time going strictly Atkins for several weeks, and losing weight very quickly. I managed to keep most of that off, even though I reverted to a very high carb diet after a while. Went on and off a few times but couldn’t stick to it because I hit a carb craving intensity that drove me insane. Was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the end of November last year, and knew that keto style is what I need to do, not only to lose weight, but to drop my bsl quickly. This time I have been a lot more relaxed (in some ways) following keto style rather than the strict atkins induction, and have concentrated on making sure I get enough fat, something my lifetime of low fat dieting had instilled a great fear in me of. I’ve found that while I’m not losing weight quite as fast, as long as I have enough fat, I’m not insanely searching the house for carbs in the middle of the night, and I’ve been able to stick to my plan for over 3 months, including the Christmas period, with only 3 deliberate times I’ve chosen to eat something high carb/processed etc. I’ve lot a total of 17 kilos (approx 38lb) in that time, with several plateaus along the way. I’ve also gone from a completely sedentary lifestyle to swimming an hour a day and have just added an extra 30 -45 mins riding a pushbike in also. For me, being able to not only do this amount of exercise, but actually look forward to it, is massive. I still have a long way to go weight wise, but I’m now 67kg down from my highest weight, and still doing well. Over 40 kg of that has been from following keto style, so it obviously works for me. My blood sugar levels have gone from between 16 and 22mmol down to between 4.5 and 6. And that’s in 3 months.
The ketogenic diet has being studied for potential therapeutic use in various neurological disorders other than epilepsy: Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), autism, headache, neurotrauma, pain, Parkinson’s disease (PD) and sleep disorders.[6]
The exact ratio of recommended macronutrients in your diet (grams of carbs vs. fat vs. protein) will differ depending on your specific goals and current state of health. Your age, gender, level of activity and current body composition can also play a role in determining your carb versus fat intake.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a dangerous metabolic state that is most commonly seen in people with type 1 diabetes and sometimes type 2 diabetics if they aren’t properly managing their insulin and diet.
Still, based on what we’ve seen with epilepsy and rat studies, chances are good that ketones may be a low-risk treatment — and perhaps even a preventive strategy — to improve brain health. See above about getting medical supervision from someone other than Dr. Google.
The day before admission to hospital, the proportion of carbohydrate in the diet may be decreased and the patient begins fasting after his or her evening meal.[18] On admission, only calorie- and caffeine-free fluids[36] are allowed until dinner, which consists of “eggnog”[Note 8] restricted to one-third of the typical calories for a meal. The following breakfast and lunch are similar, and on the second day, the “eggnog” dinner is increased to two-thirds of a typical meal’s caloric content. By the third day, dinner contains the full calorie quota and is a standard ketogenic meal (not “eggnog”). After a ketogenic breakfast on the fourth day, the patient is discharged. Where possible, the patient’s current medicines are changed to carbohydrate-free formulations.[18]

    • Quadrant 2. Healthy but not enjoyable: This is when you eat in a way you don’t enjoy but think it’s the only way and is the direct opposite of the above. It doesn’t matter how healthy a diet is if you don’t enjoy it.
One particular concern to be aware of is the risk for ketoacidosis, which especially applies to diabetics. Ketoacidosis is a dangerous metabolic state in which excessive amounts of ketones are produced. In mostly healthy individuals, ketosis is regulated by insulin, which is the hormone that controls the creation of ketone bodies and regulates the flow of fatty acids into the blood.
Many folks deal with flu like symptoms as they become fat adapted after decades of running on carbs. These temporary symptoms are byproducts of dehydration and low carbohydrate levels while your body is still trying to use carbohydrates as its primary energy source, including:

  5. Contrary to popular opinion eating ‘low carb’ does not limit your lifestyle! Get rid of the ideas that all you can eat is broiled chicken and lettuce leaves, that you can’t go out to lunch with your co-workers and that restaurant delivery service is a thing of the past.

The ketogenic diet approach to eating is one that can often be maintained and incorporated into a lifestyle, while the same can hardly ever be said for diets that restrict calories and fat, because they simply leave you feeling too hungry.
The purpose of the ketogenic diet is to force the body into a fat-burning state — burning fats instead of carbohydrates for fuel. Those who follow it eat a diet containing high amounts of fat, moderate amounts of protein and low levels of carbohydrates.
Calm the fuck down and be patient. You didn’t get out of shape in a week, you’re not getting in shape in a week. The people who have this “fast fat loss” mentality are also the ones who tend to gain it back after the diet ends, or quit entirely after a few weeks. Not because aggressive dieting doesn’t work, but because this mentality encourages the use of fad diets that, a) won’t be sustainable in the long-term, and b) doesn’t help you build the habits that allow you to maintain the loss in the long run. 15
Many people like to measure their ketosis with Ketostix, which test for ketones in the urine. This is not always a reliable indicator, since all it tells you is whether you’re excreting excess ketones, not whether you’re actually in ketosis per se.
I’m going to give you a super simple way to set your calorie intake. While people try to impress you with fancy equations, the truth is that the difference between the most complicated equations and the simplest (like the one I’m about to show you) is only 5%; and seeing your calories will be adjusted anyway, the easier it is to set your numbers, the less paralysis by analysis and the sooner you can start getting results. Cool? Cool.
The first modern study of fasting as a treatment for epilepsy was in France in 1911.[12] Twenty epilepsy patients of all ages were “detoxified” by consuming a low-calorie vegetarian diet, combined with periods of fasting and purging. Two benefited enormously, but most failed to maintain compliance with the imposed restrictions. The diet improved the patients’ mental capabilities, in contrast to their medication, potassium bromide, which dulled the mind.[13]
